How to Get the most out of Your Massage:

  1. Leave yourself extra time to get to your appointment so that you don’t arrive feeling rushed, making it harder to relax.
  2. Don’t eat just before your massage session so that your body has time to digest.
  3. Communicate with your therapist about anything that is uncomfortable or of concern. They will be more than willing to adjust pressure or position as they want your experience to be positive and healing.
  4. Try to relax your body and mind as much as possible, and open yourself to the massage process. Sometimes it helps to focus on breathing, evenly and comfortably.
  5. It is normal to feel a little sore and/or lightheaded following your massage, so take your time getting up from the table.Move slowly and sit up for a few minutes before standing.
  6. The benefits of massage are cumulative and best over time. Plan to schedule several, regular sessions in order to receive all massage has to offer.

Following Your Treatment Session:

  • Drink Water- Drinking lots of water will help flush the body of toxins pulled from the muscles and lymphatic systerm so that you don’t feel sore and achy after your massage.
  • Take it Easy- Make sure to relax and refrain from strenuous activity after your massage in order to allow your body to reap the physical and mental benefits of massage. Taking a warm bath with Epson salts or apple cider vinegar (~2 cups of either) can help further relieve any lingering tension and soreness.
  • Sleep- Allow yourself to get a good night’s rest and make sure that you fall asleep in a good position so that you sleep deeply and wake up feeling refreshed.
  • Alcohol- Do not drink alcohol prior to or following your massage. Alcohol is dehydrating to the body and massage can actually intensify the effects of alcohol in your system by increasing circulation to body tissues.
  • Activity modification- Your therapist will be able to give you suggestions about how to modify daily activities that may contribute to your areas of tension or poor posture. They will also be able to show you stretches and/or exercises that may help to alleviate discomfort and reduce your dependence on medications or other treatments.
